I was at the beach yesterday. It was a beautiful day, and the water was warm. My son had a ball diving into the waves and building sand castles.
I was walking barefoot through the hot sand making my way to parking lot to retrieve something from my SUV. On the way, I passed a group of women with their chairs placed in a circle so they could face each other as they talked while their children played in the sand.
As I passed them, I could hear their voices, but I wasn’t really listening as it was none of my business. What they said filtered into my mind nonetheless. During their conversation, they had used the term muggle,a term not often heard unless you live in the realm of Harry Potter. I think it was that word that caught my ear, and even though I wasn’t paying attention, my mind absorbed what I heard.
As I was walking back to where my husband and son were, my mind was doing what it always does: thinking and processing information. I thought of the women in the circle, and the use of the word muggle.
It wasn’t until I sat down next to my husband and adjusted the pentacle pendant suspended around my neck did what the women had been talking about make sense, and I laughed.
My husband looked at me and said, “What?”
So I told him.
As I walked by the circle of women, one of them said, “There seems to be more of them around than ever.”
Another woman responded, “What’s that?”
The first woman said, “Non-muggles…..you know.“
The second woman replied, “Ooohhh….yeah.”
My husband found it as amusing as I did.
As we were driving home, I said to my husband, “It was nice at the beach today.”
To which he replied with a smirk, “Yeah, but too many muggles.”
