Awakening was both liberating and horrifying, in my experience. On my journey, I gathered a lot knowledge and my awareness expanded. Some of what I learned was difficult and left me with unpleasant emotions. Some explained why the world is the way it is. Some was unspeakable and haunted me, and some was so unbelievable, I still have a hard time wrapping my head around it.
While there were many questions that had been answered, there were now new questions. As I lay in bed one night, I wondered what was the point of it all? While contemplating this, I drifted off to sleep. The next thing I knew, I heard a voice that said simply, “Your journey is not without souvenirs.” I opened my eyes and notice I had woken up several minutes before my alarm went off. I though the phrase was interesting, and I wrote it down. I thought it was a dream, but there were no images, just the voice.
I had been meditating for many years, but my practice was irregular. I read something by a person who was knowledgeable about meditation. He stated the one piece of advice he would give regarding meditation was to be consistent. I decided to do just that. I now meditate between 30 and 60 minutes a day – most days it’s 45. With daily meditation, my consciousness has expanded further, increasing my awareness and understanding.
Once the shock of the “real” reality subsided, awakening was liberating. Things that never made sense, now did. I was depressed and anxious because there was good reason to be. The nature of reality and the powers-that-be were the things nightmares are made of, yet, understanding the true nature of what we are set me free.
Perhaps when we come into this world, we remember in our soul things we consciously forget. Perhaps we may need to forget our previous lifetimes and the nature of what we really are to live our current life so we can learn from it. Yet, while we get a conscious wipe of memory upon re-entering this realm, an unconscious memory may still exist.
I believe it is this unconscious memory that begins to bubble up to the surface and starts, the often painful, path to awakening. We all struggle in this realm, some more than others. We all suffer in this realm, some more than others. We all learn in this realm, some more than others.
Your life is a journey, and it is not without souvenirs. These souvenirs are experiences and the wisdom you gain from living them in this life while in this realm. All these add to the progression of your soul.
In death we leave behind our bodies, our loved ones still incarnate, and “all our worldly possessions”, as the saying goes. But we take with us what we learned and experienced. While those memories may be wiped from our conscious mind upon rebirth into physical form, they become a part of our immortal soul and are kept for eternity.
